ASTM C129
Full Name
ASTM C129 – Standard Specification for Nonloadbearing Concrete Masonry Units
Scope
ASTM C129 covers hollow and solid nonloadbearing concrete masonry units made from Portland cement, water, and mineral aggregates, with or without other materials. These units are primarily intended for use in nonloadbearing partitions, but under certain conditions, they may be suitable for nonloadbearing exterior walls above grade when adequately protected from the weather.
The scope of ASTM C129 includes:
- Materials: it specifies the types of materials allowed in the manufacture of nonloadbearing concrete masonry units, including cement, aggregates, water, and other additives.
- Physical requirements: it outlines the physical properties that the units must meet, including dimensions, tolerances, and compressive strength.
- Sampling and testing: it provides procedures for sampling and testing the units to verify compliance with the specified requirements.
- Acceptance and rejection: it establishes criteria for accepting or rejecting units based on the test results.
ASTM C129 does not cover the following aspects:
- Loadbearing concrete masonry units: these are covered under ASTM C90.
- Design and construction: the standard does not address the design and construction of masonry structures, which are typically covered by building codes and other standards.
In essence, ASTM C129 ensures the quality and consistency of nonloadbearing concrete masonry units used in construction. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can produce units that meet the necessary requirements for nonloadbearing applications, contributing to the safety and durability of buildings.
