UL 3401

Full Name

UL 3401 – Outline of Investigation for 3D Printed Building Construction

Scope

UL 3401 covers the evaluation of:

  • Building elements: panels, walls, partitions, floor-ceilings, roofs, columns, beams, etc., fabricated using additive manufacturing (3D printing).
  • Structures: entire buildings or significant portions constructed using 3D printing.
  • System components: elements like outlet boxes, conduit, and electrical enclosures that are 3D printed during construction.

The evaluation process ensures that the 3D printing equipment, materials, and fabrication process consistently produce building elements that meet the required safety and performance standards. It also verifies that the system components comply with applicable product safety standards.

UL 3401 helps builders demonstrate compliance with building codes and standards, such as:

  • Fire resistance (UL 263)
  • Building envelope performance
  • Indoor air quality
  • Other relevant building code requirements

By meeting these requirements, 3D printed buildings can gain acceptance from code authorities and contribute to the wider adoption of this innovative construction technology.
