ASTM F606

Full Name

ASTM F606 – Standard Test Methods for Determining the Mechanical Properties of Externally and Internally Threaded Fasteners, Washers, Direct Tension Indicators, and Rivets

Scope

ASTM F606 is a standard test method that covers the procedures for determining the mechanical properties of externally and internally threaded fasteners, washers, direct tension indicators, and rivets. The standard includes various tests to assess properties such as:

  • Proof load: this test measures the maximum load that a fastener can withstand without permanent deformation.
  • Wedge tensile test: this test measures the tensile strength of a fastener by applying a load that causes the fastener to wedge apart.
  • Head soundness test: this test verifies the integrity of the fastener head by applying a specified torque.
  • Hardness test: this test measures the hardness of the fastener material.
  • Torque-tension test: this test measures the relationship between the torque applied to a fastener and the resulting tension in the fastener.
  • Strip test: this test measures the torque required to strip the threads of a fastener.
  • Magnetic particle inspection: this test is used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic fastener materials.
  • Penetrant inspection: this test is used to detect surface discontinuities in non-ferromagnetic fastener materials.
  • Microscopic examination: this test is used to examine the microstructure of the fastener material.

The scope of ASTM F606 includes:

  • Materials: the standard applies to a variety of materials used in the manufacture of fasteners, washers, direct tension indicators, and rivets, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium.
  • Fastener types: the standard covers a wide range of fastener types, including bolts, screws, studs, nuts, washers, and rivets.
  • Test procedures: the standard provides detailed procedures for conducting the various tests, including specimen preparation, testing apparatus, and data analysis.
  • Applications: the test results can be used for various purposes, such as quality control, product development, and design verification.

It is important to note that ASTM F606 does not specify the property requirements for fasteners, washers, direct tension indicators, or rivets. These requirements are typically specified in other standards, such as those published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
