ASTM E519
Full Name
ASTM E519 – Standard Test Method for Diagonal Tension (Shear) in Masonry Assemblages
Scope
ASTM E519 covers the determination of the diagonal tensile or shear strength of masonry assemblages. This is achieved by loading the assemblages in compression along one diagonal, which induces a diagonal tension failure causing the specimen to split apart parallel to the direction of the load.
The scope of ASTM E519 includes:
- Test method: the standard outlines the procedure for conducting the diagonal tension (shear) test on masonry assemblages. This includes specimen preparation, loading configuration, and data collection.
- Specimen size: the standard specifies the dimensions of the masonry assemblage specimen to be tested. The typical size is 1.2 m by 1.2 m (4 ft by 4 ft), although smaller specimens can be used under certain conditions.
- Materials: the standard provides guidelines on the selection and preparation of masonry units, mortar, and grout used in constructing the test specimens.
- Data analysis: ASTM E519 outlines the calculation of diagonal tensile strength from the test results. It also provides guidance on interpreting the test results and assessing the shear strength of the masonry assemblage.
- Applications: the test method is primarily used for research purposes to gather comparative data on the diagonal tensile strength of different masonry assemblages. It can also be used for quality control purposes on construction sites to check the quality of materials and workmanship.
