ASTM E518

Full Name

ASTM E518 – Standard Test Methods for Flexural Bond Strength of Masonry

Scope

ASTM E518 outlines procedures for determining the flexural bond strength of unreinforced masonry assemblages. This standard provides two methods for evaluating the bond strength between masonry units and mortar:

  1. Test method A: involves a simply supported beam subjected to third-point loading.
  2. Test method B: employs a simply supported beam with uniform loading.

Both methods require the construction of masonry prisms, which are then subjected to flexural stresses. The flexural bond strength is calculated based on the load at failure and the dimensions of the specimen.

ASTM E518 is valuable for comparing different masonry materials, evaluating the influence of mortar properties, and assessing the overall quality of masonry construction.
