ASTM E415

Full Name

ASTM E415 – Standard Test Method for Analysis of Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel by Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometry

Scope

ASTM E415 is a standard test method used to determine the elemental composition of carbon and low-alloy steel using spark atomic emission spectrometry. This technique involves generating a high-voltage spark between the sample and a reference electrode, causing the atoms in the sample to emit light at specific wavelengths. By analyzing the intensity of these emitted lines, it is possible to quantify the concentration of various elements in the steel.

Test procedure:

  • Sample preparation: the steel sample is prepared into a suitable form, such as a flat surface or a sparkable pellet.
  • Spark generation: a high-voltage spark is generated between the sample and a reference electrode.
  • Light emission: the atoms in the sample are excited by the spark, causing them to emit light at specific wavelengths.
  • Spectral Analysis: the emitted light is dispersed by a spectrometer and analyzed to determine the intensity of the spectral lines.
  • Quantification: the concentration of each element is calculated based on the intensity of its corresponding spectral line and calibration standards.

Elements typically analyzed:

  • Carbon
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorus
  • Sulfur
  • Silicon
  • Aluminum
  • Nickel
  • Chromium
  • Molybdenum
  • Copper
  • Titanium
  • Vanadium

Applications – spark atomic emission spectrometry is widely used in the steel industry for:

  • Quality control: ensuring that steel products meet specified chemical compositions.
  • Process monitoring: monitoring the composition of steel during manufacturing processes.
  • Research and development: developing new steel alloys with desired properties.
