ASTM E1155
Full Name
ASTM E1155 – Standard Test Method for Determining FF Floor Flatness and FL Floor Levelness Numbers
Scope
ASTM E1155 provides a standardized method for measuring the flatness and levelness of concrete and other flooring systems. This ensures that floors meet the required tolerances for their intended use, preventing issues with aesthetics, functionality, and the installation of subsequent finishes.
The standard defines two key metrics:
- FF number (Floor Flatness): this number quantifies the flatness of the floor surface in terms of variations in elevation over a given distance. A higher FF number indicates a flatter floor.
- FL number (Floor Levelness): this number measures the levelness of the floor surface relative to a horizontal plane. A higher FL number indicates a more level floor.
ASTM E1155 outlines specific procedures for taking measurements using a straightedge and a wedge-shaped gauge or by employing specialized profilometer devices. The collected data is then used to calculate the FF and FL numbers.
These numbers are critical for:
- Ensuring proper installation: assessing if the floor construction meets specified tolerances.
- Preventing future problems: avoiding issues like uneven tile installations, rocking furniture, and malfunctioning machinery that require a level surface.
- Verifying compliance: demonstrating that the floor conforms to industry standards and project specifications.
