ASTM D1140
Full Name
ASTM D1140 – Standard Test Methods for Determining the Amount of Material Finer than 75-μm (No. 200) Sieve in Soils by Washing
Scope
ASTM D1140 outlines a standard procedure for quantifying the amount of soil material finer than 75 microns (equivalent to a No. 200 sieve) using a washing technique. This test is crucial for determining the soil’s plasticity and permeability characteristics, which are essential factors in geotechnical engineering and construction.
The test involves:
- Sample preparation: a representative sample of soil is obtained and dried to a constant weight.
- Washing: the sample is placed in a washing apparatus, and a stream of water is used to wash away the finer particles.
- Sieving: the remaining coarser material is sieved through a No. 200 sieve to separate the finer fraction.
- Weight determination: the weight of the finer material is determined and expressed as a percentage of the original sample weight.
ASTM D1140 is widely used in various applications, including:
- Geotechnical engineering: assessing the suitability of soils for foundations, embankments, and other structures.
- Soil classification: determining the soil’s classification according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
- Material testing: evaluating the properties of aggregate materials used in construction.
- Environmental studies: assessing the impact of soil erosion and sedimentation.
