ASTM C928

Full Name

ASTM C928 – Standard Specification for Packaged, Dry, Rapid-Hardening Cementitious Materials for Concrete Repairs

Scope

ASTM C928 covers packaged, dry, cementitious materials used for rapid repairs to hardened hydraulic-cement concrete pavements and structures. These materials can be either mortar or concrete and are designed to harden quickly for expedited repairs.

Key points of the scope include:

  • Material types: the standard focuses on packaged, dry materials that are either mortar (containing less than 5% aggregate retained on a 9.5mm sieve) or concrete (containing at least 5% aggregate retained on a 9.5mm sieve).
  • Binder type: only materials with hydraulic cement as the primary binder are included. This excludes materials with organic binders like bitumens, epoxy resins, and polymers.
  • Application: the materials are intended for rapid repairs of hardened hydraulic-cement concrete, which includes pavements and other structures.
  • Additional components: the packaged materials may include aqueous solutions, emulsions, or dispersions that can partially or completely replace mixing water.
  • Exclusions: the standard doesn’t cover materials containing principal organic binders, or those used for underwater or overhead applications.

The primary goal of ASTM C928 is to establish standardized requirements for these rapid-repair materials, ensuring consistent quality and performance in their intended applications. This includes specifications for material composition, properties like compressive strength and drying shrinkage, and test methods for evaluating these properties.
