ASTM C87

Full Name

ASTM C87 – Standard Test Method for Effect of Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregate on Strength of Mortar

Scope

ASTM C87 assesses the impact of organic impurities on the strength of mortar. This is done by comparing the compressive strength of mortar cubes made with both unwashed and washed fine aggregate.

The scope of ASTM C87 includes:

  • Purpose: determining the effect of organic impurities in fine aggregate on mortar strength. This is done when a darker color than the standard is observed in the ASTM C40 test (organic impurities test).
  • Method:
    • Preparing mortar cubes using both unwashed (with organic impurities) and washed (organic impurities removed) fine aggregate.
    • Curing the mortar cubes for a specified time period.
    • Determining the compressive strength of both sets of cubes and comparing them.
  • Significance: provides a final determination of the acceptability of fine aggregates regarding organic impurities as required by ASTM C33 (Standard Specification for Concrete Aggregates).

This test method is important because organic impurities in fine aggregates can negatively affect the strength development of mortar and concrete. By comparing the strength of mortar with and without these impurities, ASTM C87 helps evaluate if the fine aggregate meets the quality requirements for use in concrete construction.
