ASTM C73
Full Name
ASTM C73 – Standard Specification for Calcium Silicate Brick (Sand-Lime Brick)
Scope
ASTM C73 covers brick made principally from sand and lime, also known as sand-lime brick, intended for use in brick masonry. The standard defines two grades of brick:
- Grade SW: brick intended for use in environments where exposure to temperatures below freezing in the presence of moisture is expected. This typically includes foundation courses and parapets in regions with severe frost action.
- Grade MW: brick intended for use in environments where exposure to temperatures below freezing is expected but saturation with water is unlikely. This generally covers brick used in wall faces (excluding parapets and foundations) or in regions with less severe frost action or drier climates.
The standard outlines specific requirements for each grade, including:
- Compressive strength: minimum compressive strength values are specified for each grade to ensure structural integrity.
- Water absorption: maximum water absorption limits are set for each grade to control the brick’s susceptibility to freeze-thaw damage.
- Dimensions: standard dimensions are defined for the brick, ensuring uniformity and compatibility with other masonry components.
ASTM C73 also addresses other aspects, such as sampling, testing, and visual inspection of the brick to ensure compliance with the specified requirements.
