ASTM C652

Full Name

ASTM C652 – Standard Specification for Hollow Brick (Hollow Masonry Units Made From Clay or Shale)

Scope

ASTM C652 covers hollow building brick and hollow facing brick made from clay, shale, fire clay, or a mixture of these materials, and fired to incipient fusion. These bricks are intended for use in masonry, providing both structural and/or facing components to the structure.

The key aspects of ASTM C652’s scope include:

  • Definition of hollow brick: the standard defines hollow brick as units with a net cross-sectional area (solid area) less than 75% of their gross cross-sectional area in any plane parallel to the surface containing the cores, cells, or deep frogs.
  • Types and grades: the standard covers four types of hollow brick in each of two grades (SW and MW) and two classes (FBS and FBA).
  • Physical requirements: it specifies requirements for compressive strength, water absorption, saturation coefficient, and dimensions, depending on the grade and type of brick.
  • Sampling and testing: it outlines procedures for sampling and testing hollow brick to ensure compliance with the specified requirements.
  • Dimensions and tolerances: it defines standard dimensions and tolerances for different types of hollow brick.

It is important to note that ASTM C652 does not cover the design and construction of masonry structures, which are addressed in other standards and building codes.
