ASTM C62
Full Name
ASTM C62 – Standard Specification for Building Brick (Solid Masonry Units Made From Clay or Shale)
Scope
ASTM C62 covers solid building brick units made from clay or shale, intended for structural and nonstructural masonry applications where the external appearance is not a primary concern. These bricks are available in various sizes, shapes, textures, and colors.
The scope of ASTM C62 includes:
- Materials: the standard specifies that the bricks must be made from clay or shale, or a combination of these materials.
- Classification: bricks are classified into grades based on their resistance to freezing and thawing when saturated.
- Physical properties: the standard outlines the physical requirements for different grades of brick, including compressive strength, water absorption, and saturation coefficient.
- Sampling and testing: it provides procedures for sampling and testing brick to verify compliance with the specified requirements.
- Dimensions and tolerances: it defines the standard dimensions and tolerances for building brick.
- Visual inspection: it outlines criteria for visually inspecting the brick for defects such as cracks, chips, and warpage.
It is important to note that ASTM C62 does not cover facing brick or brick intended for use where appearance is a requirement. Additionally, it does not cover paving brick, which are covered by separate standards.
