ASTM C42

Full Name

ASTM C42 – Standard Test Method for Obtaining and Testing Drilled Cores and Sawed Beams of Concrete

Scope

ASTM C42 provides standard procedures for:

  • Obtaining: extracting cylindrical cores by drilling from existing concrete structures and sawing beams from concrete structures.
  • Preparing: procedures to prepare the extracted cores and sawed beams for testing.
  • Testing: evaluating the compressive strength (splitting tensile strength of cores, and flexural strength of beams) of in-place concrete.

Applications of ASTM C42:

  • Evaluating existing structures: this standard is used to assess the strength of concrete in existing structures, especially when concerns arise about its ability to meet current load requirements.
  • Investigating deterioration: ASTM C42 helps identify potential weaknesses or areas of deterioration within the concrete by analyzing core samples from specific locations.
  • Verifying design strength: in some cases, core testing can be used to confirm that the concrete in the structure achieves the design strength specified during construction.

ASTM C42 is a valuable tool for evaluating the condition of concrete structures and ensuring their long-term performance.
