ASTM C29
Full Name
ASTM C29 – Standard Test Method for Bulk Density (“Unit Weight”) and Voids in Aggregate
Scope
ASTM C29 covers the determination of:
- Bulk density: the mass of aggregate per unit volume, in either a compacted or loose state.
- Voids: the space between aggregate particles not occupied by solid material. This is calculated from the bulk density determination.
The standard is applicable to:
- Aggregate types: fine, coarse, or mixed aggregates.
- Maximum size: aggregates with a nominal maximum size not exceeding 125 mm (5 inches).
The results of ASTM C29 are used for:
- Proportioning concrete mixtures: determining bulk density values for selecting proportions.
- Purchase agreements: establishing mass/volume relationships for conversions.
It’s important to note that ASTM C29 focuses on the test method itself. The sampling of aggregates is covered in other ASTM standards (e.g., ASTM D75).
