ASTM C272
Full Name
ASTM C272 – Standard Test Method for Water Absorption of Core Materials for Sandwich Constructions
Scope
ASTM C272 is a cornerstone in the field of sandwich construction materials, providing a standardized approach to evaluate the water absorption characteristics of core materials. These materials, often lightweight and insulating, play a pivotal role in the performance and durability of various structures, from buildings to marine vessels.
The test method involves several key steps:
- Sample preparation: specimens are cut from the core material to specified dimensions and conditioned to a standard moisture content.
- Immersion: the specimens are submerged in water for a predetermined period, typically 24 hours.
- Drying and weighing: the specimens are removed, dried to a constant weight, and then weighed.
- Calculation: the percentage water absorption is calculated based on the weight gain during immersion.
Several factors can influence the water absorption of core materials, including:
- Porosity: materials with higher porosity tend to absorb more water.
- Density: lower-density materials may have more void space for water to penetrate.
- Surface treatment: coatings or finishes can affect the material’s water absorption properties.
- Structure: the internal structure of the core material (e.g., honeycomb, foam) can impact water absorption.
Understanding a core material’s water absorption is crucial for several reasons:
- Durability: excessive water absorption can lead to degradation, mold growth, and structural issues.
- Insulation: water can compromise the insulating properties of core materials.
- Dimensional stability: water absorption can cause swelling or shrinkage, affecting the overall dimensions and performance of the sandwich construction.
- Compatibility with facings: the water absorption characteristics of the core material must be compatible with the facing materials used in the sandwich construction.
