ASTM C266

Full Name

ASTM C266 – Standard Test Method for Time of Setting of Hydraulic-Cement Paste by Gillmore Needles

Scope

ASTM C266 – Standard Test Method for Time of Setting of Hydraulic-Cement Paste by Gillmore Needles is a standard used to determine the time it takes for hydraulic cement paste to harden to specific degrees of stiffness. This is done using two different Gillmore needles, one with a lighter weight and one with a heavier weight.

The scope of ASTM C266 includes:

  • Purpose: the main purpose of this test method is to determine whether a cement complies with a specification limit on Gillmore time of setting.
  • Test procedure: a paste of normal consistency is prepared from the cement being tested. A specimen is molded from this paste and tested using the Gillmore needles.
  • Initial time of setting: the time it takes for the initial Gillmore needle (lighter weight) to no longer leave a complete circular impression on the paste surface.
  • Final time of setting: the time it takes for the final Gillmore needle (heavier weight) to no longer leave a complete circular impression on the paste surface.

This standard is essential for quality control in cement production and construction as it helps to:

  • Ensure compliance: verify that the cement meets the specified setting time requirements.
  • Assess workability: the setting time influences the workability of the cement paste and concrete, which is crucial for proper placement and finishing.
  • Predict strength gain: the setting time can provide an indication of the rate of strength gain of the cement.

It is important to note that ASTM C266 does not cover other methods of determining the setting time of hydraulic cement paste, nor does it address the factors that can affect the setting time, such as temperature, humidity, and the type of cement.
