ASTM C207

Full Name

ASTM C207 – Standard Specification for Hydrated Lime for Masonry Purposes

Scope

ASTM C207 covers the requirements for hydrated lime used in various masonry applications. It encompasses four types of hydrated lime:

  1. Type N: Normal hydrated lime for general masonry purposes.
  2. Type S: Special hydrated lime with enhanced properties for specific applications.
  3. Type NA: Normal air-entraining hydrated lime for general masonry purposes with added air-entraining agents.
  4. Type SA: Special air-entraining hydrated lime with enhanced properties for specific applications and added air-entraining agents.

Types N and S are suitable for use in mortar, in scratch and brown coats of cement plaster, for stucco, and for addition to portland-cement concrete.

Types NA and SA are air-entrained hydrated limes that are suitable for use in any of the above uses where the inherent properties of lime and air-entrainment are desired.

The standard outlines the following aspects:

  • Chemical composition: specifies the acceptable ranges for calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) content in each type of hydrated lime.
  • Fineness: defines the required fineness of hydrated lime, which affects its workability and performance in mortar and plaster.
  • Popping and pitting: specifies limits for popping and pitting, which are undesirable surface defects caused by the presence of unhydrated particles in the lime.
  • Water retention: sets requirements for water retention capacity, which is crucial for the proper hydration and workability of mortars and plasters.
  • Residue: limits the amount of residue after the lime is dissolved in water, ensuring a uniform and consistent product.
  • Air Entrainment (types NA and SA): specifies the air content requirements for air-entraining hydrated lime, which improves the workability, durability, and freeze-thaw resistance of mortars and plasters.

In summary, ASTM C207 provides a comprehensive framework for classifying, evaluating, and selecting hydrated lime suitable for various masonry applications, ensuring its quality and performance in mortars, plasters, stucco, and concrete.
