ASTM C117

Full Name

ASTM C117 – Standard Test Method for Materials Finer than 75-μm (No. 200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing

Scope

ASTM C117 determines the amount of material finer than a 75-μm (No. 200) sieve in mineral aggregates by washing.

The scope includes:

  • Purpose: to quantify fine material that passes through a 75-μm sieve by washing the aggregate sample. This includes clay particles, other fine particles dispersed by water, and water-soluble materials.
  • Methods: two procedures are available:
    • Procedure A: washing using only water.
    • Procedure B: washing using a wetting agent to aid in loosening fine particles from coarser ones.
  • Applicability: both fine and coarse mineral aggregates.

Fine material can significantly affect the properties of concrete or asphalt mixes.
This test helps to evaluate the suitability of aggregates for specific applications.
The results are often used in conjunction with ASTM C136 (Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates) to determine the overall gradation of the aggregate.

ASTM C117 is essential for quality control in construction, as it helps ensure that aggregates used in concrete and asphalt meet specified requirements and perform as expected.
