ASTM C1019

Full Name

ASTM C1019 – Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Grout for Masonry

Scope

ASTM C1019 provides procedures for both field and laboratory sampling and compression testing of grout used in masonry construction. The scope includes:

  • Sampling: outlines how to collect representative grout samples from both field and laboratory environments.
  • Testing: describes the method for preparing grout specimens using molds made from masonry units similar to those used in the actual construction.
  • Compression testing: details the procedure for testing the compressive strength of the grout specimens after curing.
  • Applications: this test method can be used to help select grout proportions by comparing test values or as a quality control test for uniformity of grout preparation during construction.

The standard emphasizes the importance of replicating field conditions in the laboratory to ensure the test results are representative of the grout’s performance in the actual masonry structure. It acknowledges that the specimens prepared in the lab may not exactly reproduce the exposure and curing of the grout in the field, but the conditions will be similar.
