ASTM C1017

Full Name

ASTM C1017 – Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Use in Producing Flowing Concrete

Scope

ASTM C1017 covers two types of chemical admixtures designed to produce flowing concrete:

  1. Type I: plasticizing admixtures, which reduce the water content needed for a given workability or increase the slump of concrete with a given water content.
  2. Type II: plasticizing and retarding admixtures, which combine the plasticizing effect of Type I with a delay in the setting time of concrete.

The standard outlines the requirements and tests for these admixtures when used with:

  • Reference concreting materials: standardized materials for testing the admixture’s performance.
  • Concrete-making materials proposed for specific work: the actual materials that will be used in a specific project, allowing for testing the admixture’s compatibility and effectiveness under real-world conditions.
  • Tests for both fresh and hardened concrete properties:
    • Fresh concrete: slump, air content, bleeding, time of setting, and compressive strength.
    • Hardened concrete: compressive strength, flexural strength, resistance to freezing and thawing, and length change.

The standard aims to ensure the quality and performance of chemical admixtures used to produce flowing concrete, which is essential for achieving the desired workability, strength, and durability in various construction applications.
