ASTM A1039
Full Name
ASTM A1039 – Standard Specification for Steel, Sheet, Hot Rolled, Carbon, Commercial, Structural, and High-Strength Low-Alloy, and Ultra-High Strength, Produced by Twin-Roll Casting Process
Scope
ASTM A1039 is a standard specification for steel sheet produced by the twin-roll casting process. This process involves pouring molten steel between two rotating rolls, which quickly solidifies the steel into a sheet. This method offers certain advantages over traditional hot-rolling processes, such as improved mechanical properties and reduced thickness variations.
Key requirements:
- Chemical composition: specifies maximum and minimum allowable limits for elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, and other alloying elements.
- Tensile properties: defines minimum requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
- Impact properties: specifies minimum requirements for impact resistance at a specified temperature.
- Bend test: requires the steel sheet to pass a bend test to demonstrate its ductility.
- Hardness: sets maximum limits for hardness to ensure adequate toughness.
- Surface finish: specifies the allowable surface imperfections.
Applications – ASTM A1039 steel sheet is used in various construction and industrial applications, including:
- Structural components
- Automotive parts
- Machinery
- Equipment
