Scope and Application
AASHTO M306 covers the manufacturing and performance criteria for castings used in vehicular traffic areas. These components are primarily installed in roadways, bridge decks, and parking facilities where they are subjected to heavy, repeated dynamic loads. The standard encompasses:
- Manhole frames and covers
- Catch basin frames and grates
- Trench grates
- Utility access covers
Key Requirements of AASHTO M306
The standard sets forth stringent criteria to guarantee that castings will not fail catastrophically or deform significantly under the weight of heavy commercial vehicles.
1. Material Specifications
Castings must be manufactured from robust, high-quality materials. AASHTO M306 heavily references ASTM standards for metallurgical requirements, predominantly focusing on two types of iron:
- Gray Iron: Must meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A48, typically Class 35B, which provides excellent compressive strength and machinability.
- Ductile Iron: Must conform to ASTM A536, generally Grade 80-55-06 or 65-45-12, offering superior tensile strength and impact resistance compared to standard gray iron.
2. Proof Load Testing
The hallmark of AASHTO M306 is its rigorous physical testing requirement, designed to simulate severe traffic loading (comparable to H-20 and HS-20 wheel loads).
- The 40,000-lb Test: Castings (covers and grates) must be subjected to a 40,000-pound proof load.
- Load Application: The load is applied through a 9-inch by 9-inch block, simulating the footprint of a dual-tire commercial truck.
- Acceptance Criteria: Upon removal of the load, the casting must exhibit no cracks and no permanent deformation. This ensures that the material behaves elastically under extreme traffic stress, maintaining its structural integrity.
3. Dimensions, Finish, and Fit
A casting that shifts or rattles under traffic is a noise nuisance and a potential hazard. AASHTO M306 requires:
- Tight Tolerances: Strict dimensional accuracy to ensure covers seat perfectly within their frames.
- Machined Surfaces: Bearing surfaces are often required to be machined to prevent rocking.
- Defect-Free Finish: Castings must be free from sand holes, blowholes, shrinkage, and other structural defects that could compromise their strength or aesthetic quality.
Why Compliance Testing is Critical
Simply casting iron into the shape of a grate is not enough to guarantee performance. Variances in the cooling process, metallurgical impurities, or microscopic casting defects can drastically reduce the load-bearing capacity of a manhole cover or grate. Rigorous, independent testing verifies that the chemical composition and physical performance of a batch perfectly align with AASHTO M306 requirements, mitigating liability for manufacturers and ensuring safety for the municipalities that install them.
